Today we will be looking at the ACOG sight for AR-15s and determining whether or not they are worth your money. The Trijicon ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsights) are one of the priciest. Also, highest quality sights that you can purchase.
Purchasing the perfect sight for you can be a difficult and demanding process. There are varied opinions on all of the products you will be looking at. A multitude of different features and prices.
Multiple needs and purposes for different sights to go through. It is important to know what you will be needing this for before getting started.
We will be looking at a variety of features to determine whether or not it is the right choice for you. Among those qualities will be the field of view you are given, glass quality/ability to see clearly.
Also, the magnification, and reticle illumination. Of course the balance of the quality versus the price. Now there are different ACOG sight of course, but we will be determining whether or not the ACOG as a whole is worth it.
What is the ACOG and How Does it Work?
ACOG stands for Advanced Combat Optical Gunsights. And are made by the company Trijicon. They are a series of different telescopic sights that were originally just made for the M4 carbine and the M16 rifle. But have now expanded to to other guns as well.
These sights are immensely popular, especially in the military. They are excellent for combat because they has a fixed power, allowing you to pick it up and immediately use it. A fixed power simply means that you do not have to adjust the optical power. You are able to simply shoot and the sight will zoom in and out accordingly for you.
They are also very compact. The riflescope does have an illuminated reticle pattern that can be used for everything from no light at all to extremely bright light. That way you have more potential to hit your target, no matter the lighting conditions.
What Makes the ACOG Sights Unique
One unique aspect of the ACOG sight is their incredible sturdiness and ruggedness. They are equipped to handle any kind of abuse that is thrown at them. There have even been torture tests done on these products to ensure that they can handle absolutely anything.
Another interesting feature of these sights is their reticle illumination and glass quality. The glass quality, while it isn’t better than every single sight on the market, is clear enough to make you believe. You are just looking at something with your naked eyes.
The reticle illumination provides very effective illumination at the top of the scope. As well as radioactive Tritium for low light conditions. These qualities are also excellent for eye relief, causing less strain as you use the sight.
They also have fixed magnification, which basically means that you are not able to adjust it at all. There are several different magnification levels available from the manufacturer.
But, ranging from 1.5 to 6 magnification power.
Due to the fact that it has no batteries and fixed power, they are also extremely easy to use. You are able to simply look through it with both eyes open and shoot. They are also relatively lightweight compared to other models at only around fourteen ounces.
With all of those unique features comes a much higher price than other models. The ACOG sight are high in demand and top quality. Those features will cost you a little more than you might be expecting to pay.
These sights will range anywhere from $900 to $3500 new, depending on which one you end up going with. Trijicon offers a huge variety in different products with different specs. This is reflected in the cost too. This is much pricier than other companies and sights.
However, often times you can find them used online as well, so you may be looking at spending a little less in that case.
The pricing of these is one of the only downsides to buying an ACOG sight. However, the other qualities do make it worth the money if you have it.
Public Perception (Other ACOG Sights Reviews)
Overall, the general public really enjoys the ACOG sights. They are heavily used in the military for combat, and are always in high demand for civilians as well.
Many reviews praised the overall ruggedness and incredible durability of the products. Some even going as far to say that it’s the toughest sight that they have come across as gun owners.
Another highpoint for many users was the simple fact that anyone could use it easily. The design is very simple and light to handle. Doesn’t require any turning on due to the lack of batteries, and allows anyone who tries it an easy time.
There were only a few complaints that we came across a few times. One was the simple fact that while the glass is high quality. It isn’t the highest quality-which at its price is something that is expected. The glass they use in the products allows the user to easily use the sight without any eye strain at all. But there are other models that provide the owner an even easier time.
The other complaint that we saw was simply the price of the sights. As stated before, these sights will cost you a decent amount-even if you do happen to find one used. This is a huge drawback for a lot of people, who simply cannot afford to spend that kind of money on a sight for a gun.
All in all, the reviews were mostly extremely positive. This sight is definitely worth the money if it can be afforded.
Your Choices Within Trijicon ACOG
Once you have decided that you will be buying an ACOG sight, how do you know which one to choose?
For an AR-15, your best choices out of their sights are going to be the 4x32, the 3x30, and the 3.5x35. While there are other models to consider. We will just be looking at these three options since there are so many to choose from.
Starting with the 4x32, your magnification will be 4X and you will have a 32mm objective lens. This model has the largest field of view out of the three just mentioned, with almost twice as much area as the 3x30.
Because this scope does have the shortest eye relief of the three. You will have to shoot the gun with your nose to the charging handle, which is considered a downside for some users.
The 3x30 offers eye relief of 1.9”. But the scope is only 20 feet at 200 yards with 3x magnification and a 30mm objective lens. It is a great, lightweight scope to have, as long as you are aware of the shortcomings with the field of view.
As for the 3.5 by 35, this product provides great eye relief at 2.4”, and a field of view that is moderate- 29 feet at 100 yards. The only issues with this scope in comparison to the first two is the fact that it is much, much heavier than the others. This model weighs 18 ounces, which is four more than the scopes mentioned beforehand.
However, if you do not mind the weight, this is an all-around great sight as far as specs are concerned.
What We Think About ACOG Sight
Overall, the quality of the Trijicon ACOG sight are incredibly hard to beat. They offer extreme durability and hold up no matter what the situation is. The scopes are also incredibly convenient when it comes to lighting. Allowing you to use them in full sun or barely any daylight at all.
In addition to those features, the fact that you are able to simply pick your gun up, aim quickly with your sight. Also, shoot right away is definitely a big upside for us as well.
While they are expensive, the features and high quality of these sights do speak for themselves. We would definitely say that they are worth purchasing if you can afford it.
However, since they are such a costly purchase. We would not recommend them for someone who is only going to go shooting a couple times a year. If you are someone who is not regularly using your gun, you will not get your money’s worth out of the scope.
If you are someone who is dedicated to shooting on a very regular basis. Have the desire for very high quality in all aspects of your scope. Need something rugged that can withstand anything-this is the product for you.
We hope this review assists you in your search for the perfect scope and that you enjoyed our honest opinions. If you have a sight from Trijicon ACOG, what are your thoughts on it? Does it live up to the hype for you? If you are not someone who owns one, are you interested in buying one?
